Our chico pride 2020 events & Videos
In order to keep our community safe in 2020, we had to get very creative in how we imagined and produced Chico Pride events. Below are the videos, recordings, and notes on some of the events we held.
the Queer Variety Channel Show
The Queer Variety Channel Show featured stage performances, messages about our sponsors and vendors, and some comedic antics from our hosts: Miss Charity Dumpcake DeVersailles, and The Voice of Mr. Kelly Houston. It was primarily recorded at the then-closed Maltese Bar, with our production team observing tight safety guidelines for COVID-19. All of the vendors and sponsors mentioned in this show can be found on our Virtual Marketplace page.
The Rainbow brunch cook-along
We teamed up with Chef Anika Canton of Garden Cuisine and the Chico Natural Foods Co-Op to produce this completely original concept: Meal kits with everything you’d need to make Rainbow Brunch Tacos for 2, were available to purchase at the Co-Op. Pride-goers picked these up during the week leading up to Pride, then watched this video of Chef Anika preparing the tacos while they cooked along at home.
Drag Storytime and kids’ hour
We teamed up with our friends at the Faith Lutheran Church for this event, which was a live Zoom call with children and families featuring an art project, sing-alongs, breathing exercises, and drag performers reading three children’s books about inclusivity, diversity, and self-expression. Though the Zoom session is passed, you can watch the story reading.
Interfaith Visibility Service
A variety of local faith organizations including Congregation Beth Israel, Faith Lutheran Church, First Baptist Church, The Unitarian Universalist Church, Trinity Methodist Church, First Christian Church, and more teamed up for this streamed non-denomenational spiritual service. Representatives from each faith were invited to share a song, a reading, and speak on the ways their faith validates, uplifts and supports people of LGBTQIA+ identities.
Teen Drag makeup tutorial & live show w/ astronaut ice cream
Local drag queen Anastacia Beaverhousen led teens through a rainbow-themed drag makeup tutorial via Zoom, then pop rock band Astronaut Ice Cream played a special show just for them, followed by a DJ dance set by Astronaut Ice Cream’s Kirt Lind.
